Dolton honors fire crew with unit citation for rescue after semi struck house

At a village meeting, a presenter read a written commendation from Dr. Bernie Heilixer, identified in the meeting transcript as the EMS medical director. The letter to Acting Chief John Calhoun thanked the department for its “outstanding response” to the “semi truck into the house on 12/04/2024” and praised the team’s role in extrication and patient stabilization. The transcript quotes Heilixer: “It was great to see professionalism and and cooperation between the multiple agencies that responded. Please thank all involved for their dedication and caring.”
The presenter said the citation recognizes individuals and the company that demonstrated “exceptional skill, proficiency, and dedication to duty while operating under [an] emergency incident.” The presenters also noted that two firefighters who were not on duty came from home to assist at the scene.
Those named in the meeting as recipients were Engineer Lance Bergeron (absent due to a family emergency), Engineer John Smith, Engineer Ethan Stratman and Engineer Edwin Nabla. The presenter praised the recipients’ training and said their actions and structural shoring helped save the victim’s life.
No formal vote or policy action accompanied the recognition; meeting remarks consisted of the reading of the commendation and the presentation of the unit citation.
