ALRB reports settlement in Ventura County case and lists statewide outreach events

General Counsel Julie Montgomery reported a settlement involving Saticoye Berry Farms (Ventura County) at the Aug. 27 meeting of the Agricultural Labor Relations Board. According to Montgomery, two unfair labor practice charges filed in 2024 were resolved as part of the settlement: three workers received a total of $17,353 for lost wages and payment in lieu of reinstatement, and standard notice remedies were included.
Montgomery said one of the charges involved an allegation that a worker who complained about mistreatment and harassment was later retaliated against by supervisors who scrutinized work more closely, mocked workers and assigned more difficult tasks. The board’s staff investigated and workers participated; when the season ended the workers who had complained were not rehired and that gave rise to an additional charge alleging retaliation for participation in the ALRB process. The settlement resolved both charges and the matter was closed in less than a year, according to Montgomery.
Montgomery also highlighted staff outreach ahead of Labor Rights Week, including participation in a health fair in Orosi (Tulare County), a labor rights workshop with a labor commissioner, office hours and community trainings in Kern County, outreach at farmworker housing with EDD in Imperial County, and a training for ALAS (a community‑based organization) staff in Half Moon Bay (San Mateo County).
Montgomery praised regional staff for their work in achieving settlements and conducting outreach. The board did not take separate action on the settlement in open session; settlement terms were reported by the general counsel.
