District to apply for ATSI funding to support four schools identified for additional support

The director of federal programs explained that ATSI is a federal designation (new terminology replacing some prior targeted-support labels) used to identify schools requiring additional targeted support every three years. Four district schools were identified: Koolamee, Davie High, Pine Brook and South Davie. Each school has identified subgroups such as students with disabilities and English learners that the ATSI funds would support.
The application proposes two district-level goals: build staff capacity for a tiered instruction and intervention model targeted to identified subgroups, and build infrastructure to implement that model and support core instruction. Proposed action steps include targeted professional development aligned to each school and strengthening PLC structures to address subgroup needs.
Funding shown in the presentation is split across two fiscal years: an initial allotment (FY24 amount as presented) and a larger allotment the following year; combined totals and per-school shares were listed in the application materials. If approved, each of the four schools would be eligible for an equal share of the per-school allotment described in the application.
The board asked how schools are identified; staff said identifications are based on performance data and testing indicators used by the state and noted designations recur on a three-year cycle. The board will receive the formal application for approval at the February meeting.
