Polk County approves revised waste-hauler permit, changes renewal date to October 1

Polk County Commissioners Court on July 8 approved a revised waste‑hauler permit application intended to strengthen oversight of local waste collection and to align permit renewals with the county fiscal year.

The revised application removes the prior reference to the permits department, moves permit administration to environmental enforcement, and adds documentation requirements requiring haulers to submit records showing the total amount of waste collected. The revision updates inspection criteria, provides for fee adjustments, and changes the annual renewal date from Jan. 1 to Oct. 1 to align contract and fiscal periods.

Environmental enforcement and other officials told the court the changes are intended to close gaps that allow some individuals to claim hauler status while directing others to dump waste on private property. Court discussion noted the county will return with further information on a cleanup program and potential funding commitments so commissioners can decide how much county staff and budget will be dedicated to removal of illegally deposited waste.

The court approved the permit revision by motion. The record shows commissioners present voted in favor; two commissioners were recorded as absent for the meeting.
