In a May message, District 21 Superintendent Dr. Michael Connelly reminded families that the last day of school is Tuesday, June 10; said returning-student registration for 2025–26 is open; recapped a late-April health fair; and announced three incoming principals, two district-level hires and two new board members.
Dr. Michael Connelly, superintendent of District 21, told families in a May message that the last day of school will be Tuesday, June 10, and urged returning families to complete online registration for the 2025–26 school year as soon as possible.
"The last day of school will be Tuesday, June 10, marking the official end of an incredible school year," Connelly said, and added that "returning student registration for the 2025–26 school year is officially open." He said families will receive an email with a link to the district's online registration portal and that school offices can help those who need assistance.
The registration information, Connelly said, helps the district plan teacher and class assignments, transportation and resources for each school. He asked families to register early so the district can prepare for the new school year.
Connelly also recapped a large-scale health and wellness fair the district held in late April at London Middle School, thanking participants and saying the district hopes to continue offering similar resources.
The superintendent named three incoming school principals who will begin this summer: Ben Nedich at Holmes Middle School; Emily Gary, who will lead Longfellow Elementary and who has served as assistant principal at Frost Elementary for four years; and Lisa Applequist, who will lead Twain Elementary and who has served as principal at Whitman Elementary for four years. Connelly said each brings experience and a commitment to student success.
At the district level Connelly announced two appointments: Louis Roberts as executive director of human resources, who will oversee recruitment, hiring, employee relations and professional development; and Sherry Massa as director of student services, tasked with coordinating student services from pre-K through eighth grade.
Connelly also welcomed two new members of the District 21 Board of Education, Carrie Debit and Ileana Guzman, and thanked Phil Pritzker, who "concluded his service on the board after more than three decades of leadership," for his long service to the district.
Connelly closed the message by thanking students, families and staff for their work and flexibility and offering encouragement for the final weeks of the school year: "Let's finish strong."
