The Stockton Arts Commission voted to purchase 10 10-by-10 booths for Stockton Con at $170 each, for a total of $1,700, and will pay the cost from the Stockton Arts Commission Discretionary Fund. The action passed by roll-call vote with five yes votes and two absences.
Commissioner Kahl, who introduced the request, said the two-day Stockton Con event is scheduled for Sept. 11–12 and described the purchase as a way to create a space for Stockton residents — especially high school and college students — to display artwork and network. "I want to create a space to encourage high school and college students to display their artwork and connect with other artists," Commissioner Kahl said.
During discussion, commissioners asked whether the $170 booth price reflected a discount. "That is the face value of the booth," Kahl replied. Commissioners also asked how artists would be selected. Kahl said the commission had not finalized a selection process and that the initial plan is to use a first-come, first-served approach, with the commission or Stockton Con staff reviewing applicants. "That process will need to be worked out, after approving this," Kahl said.
Vice Chair Haim said the commission should adopt simple criteria to ensure equitable distribution and suggested forming a small subgroup to draft those criteria. Trevor, a staff member, said the commission has general selection criteria for larger projects and could adapt them for this effort. Commissioners also discussed allowing two artists to share a booth if demand is high.
Kahl noted Stockton Con already lists the Stockton Arts Commission as a sponsor on its website and that promotional flyers were available for commissioners to review. "Our SACS logo is actually on there as a sponsor," Kahl said, adding that commissioners would receive the flyer by email for feedback before publication.
Vice Chair Haim moved to approve the purchase with an equity criteria condition; Commissioner Cahill seconded the motion. The clerk conducted a roll-call vote; the motion passed with five yes votes and two absences.
The commission adjourned the short meeting and noted the next Stockton Arts Commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Oak Park Center.
