Denton County court backs letter supporting feasibility study for Texas Tech Health Science Center campus

Denton County Commissioners Court unanimously agreed to sign a draft letter of support asking state leaders to consider establishing a Texas Tech University Health Science Center campus in the county, county legislative staff told the court.

Brooke Hambrick gave the court an update on the 89th Texas Legislature, noting the session’s priorities and the timing of key committee activity. Hambrick said the county is tracking bills that affect county government and described the request: county staff asked commissioners to lend their names to a letter supporting a Texas Tech Health Science Center campus feasibility study intended to expand local medical education opportunities.

The judge said the proposed campus would be intended as a complement to existing institutions in North Texas and that the county and local municipalities would continue collaborative outreach with nearby mayors and leaders as the feasibility work proceeds. The court moved and seconded approval of the letter; the motion carried unanimously.

County staff described the item as an early step in a longer process; the feasibility stage does not commit the county to funding construction or operation of a campus. The court directed staff to continue coordination with regional municipal leaders and the county delegation in Austin and to circulate the letter to interested local governments for their possible sign-on.
