Wake County Board of Education appoints Christina Gordon to fill District 2 vacancy

The board used written ballots, eliminating the lowest-scoring candidates across successive rounds until Gordon earned a majority. Chair Chris Haggerty announced the board had a majority and welcomed Christina Gordon to serve on the board.
Gordon, a long-time Wake County teacher and current professional learning specialist, described herself to the board as both a product of Wake County Schools and a parent with children in the district. She told members she has deep ties to District 2 and said the role would be both a professional and personal commitment. "I believe that every student, no matter their ZIP code, no matter their background, they are afforded the opportunity to have a champion," Gordon said during her closing remarks.
Board members who spoke during deliberations cited several reasons for their votes. Several members praised Gordon's classroom experience, National Board certification and recent work leading professional learning for teachers. Chair Chris Haggerty said the applicant pool was strong and that the board had "tremendous candidates" to consider.
The board conducted multiple rounds of secret written balloting. The final recorded tally was six votes for Christina Gordon and two votes for Caroletta Daniels (per the board tally announced at the meeting). The board did not record a formal motion proposer or a second in the public record; the voting process followed the procedure announced at the meeting: members marked a single choice on paper ballots and staff collected them for tabulation.
Gordon will serve the remainder of Johnson Hosler's elected term and must remain domiciled in District 2 for the duration of the appointment. Staff said they will notify all applicants of the result and provide swearing-in details. The board also reminded the appointee that employees of the Wake County Public School System may not serve on the board while employed by the district.
Background: The vacancy arose when Monika Johnson Hosler left the District 2 seat; the person appointed fills the unexpired term through the end of 2026. The interview format used identical pre-distributed questions asked in turn by each board member; candidates were given roughly 30 minutes each with opportunities for closing statements. After the interviews, the board recessed and returned to hold the deliberation and balloting described above.
The appointment and vote were the only formal action taken during the meeting. Staff will notify the successful candidate and other applicants of the decision and provide guidance on next steps and the swearing-in schedule.
