The San Antonio City Council on June 18 certified the results of the June 7 municipal runoff election and administered the oath of office to Gina Ortiz Jones as mayor and four council members-elect.
City Clerk Debbie Ruckus Sitters presented the canvass report to the council, saying the total number of votes cast — including provisional and overseas ballots — was 143,164, which she characterized as a 17% turnout. The clerk then announced the runoff outcomes as presented in the official report: Dr. Suk Kor in District 1, Rick Galvan in District 6, Ivelisse Mesa Gonzalez in District 8, Misty Spears in District 9, and Gina Ortiz Jones for mayor. The clerk reported vote shares in the canvass presentation (for example, the clerk reported 57% for several district winners and 54% for the mayor), and characterized each named candidate as "considered elected." (Canvass presentation at 00:03:31–00:07:17.)
A motion to certify the results was made and seconded. After brief council discussion, the mayor announced the motion carried. The record in the meeting transcript shows the motion was adopted; the transcript does not include a roll-call tally. Following certification, the council issued certificates of election and the mayor and councilmembers-elect were sworn in by repeating the oath administered "in the name of and by the authority of the state of Texas," each concluding with "So help me God." Newly sworn Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and the councilmembers-elect then took their seats and the clerk completed a roll call for the newly seated body.
The canvass and swearing-in concluded the council's sole agenda item for the session. The certification formalizes the results as presented by the clerk and allows the newly elected officials to assume their duties immediately under the city procedures shown in the meeting.
