Tracy Andrew, the 250 committee chair for the Butler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, told the Greenville County Committee of the Whole that her chapter seeks permission to add the names of Revolutionary War veterans who settled in Greenville County to the county veterans memorial.
The request follows research by the Upcountry History Museum that identified 63 graves with known locations and additional work by the Sons of the American Revolution that the presenter said expands the county list to about 144 veterans. "We were recently awarded $7,500," Andrew said, adding that her chapter is providing a $1,000 match and that the group applied for a $15,000 competitive grant from the South Carolina 250 Commission in June. She said the combined $8,500 would be the starting budget and that the project may need more funding once vendor quotes are obtained.
The proposed engraving would be placed on the far-left granite tablet of the existing memorial. Andrew said required sponsor language would note the contribution of unnamed women, Native and African Americans and cite the South Carolina American Revolution Sisters Centennial Commission; DAR and SAR insignia are proposed for display. She also described a plan to install a QR-code station to give visitors more background on the people listed and related museum research.
Council members asked logistical questions, including whether the vendor who engraved the existing names could repeat the work for consistency. A council member said, "I just feel like we'll we we want the look to be consistent with the other names there." Andrew replied that Alan Dabney is obtaining quotes and that some local vendors have declined the work so far.
Andrew said the chapter hopes to complete engraving tied to a 2026 inscription on the memorial and pointed to nearby anniversary events, including a December 6 commemoration of the Battle of the Great Canebrake. Loretta, a DAR member, invited council members to a wreath-laying ceremony at Graceland West Cemetery on Dec. 13 as part of Wreaths Across America and described local wreath efforts.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the request during the meeting; presenters were asked to follow up with vendor quotes and any further funding details.
