During the Feb. 6 second public forum, resident John Dixon asked the council to reconsider allowing fireworks in residential areas and urged more urgency because of recent state legislative activity that could expand sales and allowable use dates. Dixon cited a recent House proposal to allow year-round sales and additional use dates and referenced a high-profile accident reported in the press.
"Those fireworks ... they don't know boundaries, but they sure can find victims," Dixon said, citing a news account of an accident where fireworks tipped over and caused fatalities and injuries. He asked the council to consider a survey of Marion property owners or other steps to record public opinion.
Mayor Nicholas Abu Asli told Dixon the council has scheduled a policy review in April and will revisit its fireworks rules at that time. No change was adopted at the Feb. 6 meeting.
