County considers regional economic‑development alliance; fire marshal flags water‑access opportunity to lower insurance costs

County manager Bill Shipley reported on two items from his recent outreach.
Regional alliance visioning workshop. Shipley and Larry Van Hoos attended a regional visioning workshop with representatives from 17 counties to explore forming a regional organization to pursue economic development collaboratively. Shipley said the session was informational, no decisions were made, and participants will receive a follow‑up survey; cost to Alleghany for the initial workshop was minimal and future participation costs appeared likely to be small.
Fire‑protection and water access. Shipley and Van Hoos described a conversation with Vernon Wade from the State Fire Marshal’s office about ISO (insurance service office) ratings. Shipley said three districts (Piney Creek, Laurel Springs and Glade Creek) currently have ISO ratings of 9 and that the marshal indicated moving those districts to an ISO 6 rating could reduce homeowners’ insurance costs by an estimated 40%–45%. Shipley said the primary technical hurdle is water access (points for refilling apparatus) and that soil and water and fire departments will be involved in identifying certified water sources and needed infrastructure upgrades. The county described follow‑up meetings with fire departments and the state to outline steps required to pursue rating changes.
