Tourism board reports steady revenue, highlights $75,000 wayfinding project under DOT review

Steve Mason, presenting as the Tourism Development Authority representative, gave a second-quarter (October–December) financial report and a project update.
Mason said the TDA’s revenue and expenses for the second quarter were generally comparable with the prior year and noted outstanding grants and invoices the authority expects to pay over the coming months. He told commissioners the TDA has invested about $75,000 so far in a county wayfinding signage project designed by Destination by Design and described the project as divided into phases (the first phase includes 14 signs; a second phase was described as 18 signs). Mason said the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is reviewing proposed sign locations and that some signs may need repositioning to meet DOT specifications.
Mason also reviewed recent grant allocations and reimbursed expenses tied to local events and to school and veterans’ facility work. He read the current TDA board roster and announced the reappointment of John Kilmartin and Bill Nilo to the authority.
Commissioners asked about reporting cadence and printing costs for the packet; Mason said the TDA reports quarterly and annually and offered to provide materials electronically so the county can print as needed. Commissioners voiced general support for the signage project and for continuing to coordinate with NCDOT on sign placement and materials.
