Midwest City authority approves $1.53 million contract to upgrade Edgewood lift station

The Midwest City Municipal Authority voted to award a $1,530,000 contract to Howard Construction Inc. to complete phase one of the Edgewood Lift Station Improvement Project, a staff presentation said.

Mister Lyon, a staff member presenting the project, said the work will include electrical upgrades and three new pumps to increase capacity at the Eastside lift station and is the ‘‘midpoint’’ of improvements identified in the east-side sewer study. He said the contract also includes construction of a permanent bypass that will be used during the project and kept for future maintenance needs.

‘‘They’re gonna make that permanent so that when we need to do maintenance in the future, we can use that and basically flip a switch, bring that pump in, and and it goes to our force main and goes to our plant without any issues,’’ Mister Lyon said.

Council members asked about a roughly $100,000 line item described in the bid for bypass work; staff clarified that the bypass will both serve the current construction and remain available to avoid emergency rentals and wet-well overflows in the future.

After discussion the governing body moved and seconded the contract award and approved it by voice vote. The meeting record shows members indicated ‘‘aye’’ and the chair declared the motion carried; no roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.

The project was described as Phase 1 of a multi-year program of lift-station and wet-well upgrades anticipated to continue over the next several years to reach the capacities recommended in the east-side sewer study. The contract award covers construction, materials, equipment and labor needed to complete the Phase 1 scope; the contract number was not specified in the meeting transcript.
