Cumberland outlines bond projects: high‑school roof and security upgrades, NCMS elevator, playground schedule

"There are 13 sections, if you break it out. There's 1 really, really bad section. It's the guidance entrance that you come in. That leaks, profusely," Dr. Thornton said about the high‑school roof.
He said the package to be submitted to RIDE for review also includes updated cameras, door alarms, card readers and a new public‑address system for the high school.
On middle‑school accessibility, Dr. Thornton said North Cumberland Middle School (NCMS) will receive a proper elevator in the existing shaft to replace a lift that has "historically...broken" and cannot hold the same weight as an elevator. Work at NCMS also includes a vestibule "man trap" (a second set of doors), a PA system and camera upgrades.
Dr. Thornton outlined playground replacements and fencing on a staggered schedule: Cumberland Hill expected in early April, Garvin on May 1 and Ashton on June 1. He said playground designs now include fencing to address historical security gaps.
Committee members asked about BF Nord site constraints, including a Veterans Memorial and whether a ball field could be accommodated. Dr. Thornton said the design will relocate the memorial to the front-left of the site and that there is no space for a full ball field on the BF site but a smaller, elementary‑size soccer field could fit in the footprint.
These were informational updates; no bond appropriations or formal votes were taken at the meeting.
