Middletown Prairie lays out three-year literacy, math and MTSS goals; sets one-year behavior target

Middletown Prairie Elementary Principal Steven Martin presented his building'level school improvement plan at the Nov. 3 study session, emphasizing three-year goals for ELA and math connected to the district'wide shift to STAR benchmark assessments and a one-year target to cut minor behavior referrals by 15 percent.
Martin told the board the school will use STAR benchmark data, newly adopted CQLA curriculum, core-4 instructional nonnegotiables and PLC-grade-level data days to pursue a 5 percent proficiency-band increase over three years. "We're excited to see what [STAR] has to do, but we can't really make a year goal without experiencing it for a year," Martin said, noting the district is treating some goals as multiyear because benchmarks adapt and the district wants to be data-informed.
On behavior, Martin and PBIS lead Tracy Beecher said teachers now document minor behavior incidents using Google Forms; the PBIS leadership team reviews forms on a six-week cycle to identify students for Check-In/Check-Out and small-group SEB supports. Martin summarized the one-year behavior goal as a 15 percent reduction in minor discipline referrals and described classroom- and school-level Tier 1 SEL lessons, Bulldog Way Day refreshers and targeted PD for PBIS tiers.
Martin also said MTSS academic and behavioral leadership roles have been clarified: Caitlin Schroeder leads the academic portion and Beecher the behavior side, supported by floating substitutes to expand intervention reach. The master schedule was revised to give grade-levels dedicated Win Time for reading and math; Martin said he expects PD over the next three years on how to use that time effectively.
Board members praised the school'level progress and asked about how the district will sustain gains. Martin reiterated the importance of celebrating strengths from Five Essentials results and continuing monthly leadership team meetings.
Ending: Martin said the building will refine year-to-year targets as STAR data arrive and will continue routine PLCs, PD on CQLA/UFLI and monthly PBIS review.
