Council delays Huntington Drive chip‑seal; county to reschedule next summer

City staff updated the Bryan City Council on Sept. 2 that a planned chip‑seal resurfacing of Huntington Drive will be postponed until next summer after equipment failures and cold weather prevented successful application.
Ryan (staff member) told council crews attempted to apply chip seal this summer but encountered mechanical breakdowns with the contractor’s chip spreader and a later hitch-height mismatch with county trucks. A subsequent cold snap — temperatures in the forties — would have prevented proper adhesion, Ryan said, so staff decided not to perform a second, risky application this year and instead will arrange county assistance next summer.
Council members asked that residents be notified when the county schedules the work. Ryan said staff will deliver door hangers and signage, and the county foreman told staff he will include Huntington Drive in next summer’s chip‑seal schedule pending appropriate temperatures (staff indicated a preferred daytime range in the eighties).
Resident Steve Cox of Huntington Drive told council he supported waiting and said the street is in acceptable condition for winter until the work can be done.
The council did not take a formal vote on the road action; staff said routine touch‑ups would be performed as needed and the county will coordinate the replacement work next June–July.
