Parks + Rec lists near-term projects; Little Blue Trace bridge estimated at $900,000 and out to bid

Michelle Newman, director of Jackson County Parks + Rec, told the committee the department currently maintains nine term-and-supply contracts for construction and maintenance services, and that the majority of those contracts run through 2026 (named vendors include Heartline, Rand, She Digs It, Taylor Made, US Engineering, Universal and STAACO).
Newman outlined several active and upcoming projects: a Longview Marina flotation replacement and store-floor repairs, electrical and structural repairs at Missouri Town ahead of the fall festival, culvert and erosion repairs, sidewalk work at Blue Springs Campground, siding and gutter replacement at Fleming Meeting Hall, chimney repair at Kemper Outdoor Education Center, maintenance-shop renovations at Longview, Woods Chapel exterior work and a Tacoma Shelter playground replacement scheduled to finish in November. Parks staff said they will provide projected completion dates and other details on request.
On the Little Blue Trace trail bridge, Newman said the project is out to bid, has an engineer’s estimate of approximately $900,000 and that Parks is seeking additional funding — the project is not currently funded in the Parks department’s budget. She said the department hopes to begin construction this year if funding is secured.
Newman also reviewed seasonal operations: Parks staff begin planning Christmas in the Park in February, set up begins Oct. 1, and Longview operations shift to a second shift on Nov. 11 to support the event. Newman said much of the display work is done in-house by park carpenters and that STAACO provides electrical services when contractors are needed.
The committee asked Parks to share contract rosters and specific project schedules and to follow up on funding sources for the Little Blue Trace bridge.
