Planning commission approves 600-sq.-ft. addition to DeMille Road home

The Rockville Planning Commission approved a building-permit application for a roughly 600-square-foot addition to an existing house at 87 West DeMille Road submitted by property owner Jonathan Zambella.
Zambella said the addition will add a bedroom, bathroom and laundry to a currently small, single-bedroom home; he said he does not live at the property now but owns it. Commissioners confirmed the project reduces a covered rear porch footprint and that the addition does not increase the degree of nonconformity under the town’s land-use code. Staff and commissioners reminded the owner-builder that demolition of porch elements requires appropriate permits and that all inspections must be scheduled with the town’s building inspector, Zach Martin.
Commissioners also discussed occupant and accessory-dwelling considerations; they noted there is no intent to create a separate dwelling or kitchen and that the owner must comply with setback and inspection rules. The application was approved by roll call.
