Le Mars council adopts plans for downtown traffic signal modernization, estimates $1.13 million cost

The Le Mars City Council on Aug. 19 adopted plans, specifications, form of contract and an estimate of cost for the Downtown Traffic Signal Modernization Project and authorized the next steps toward bidding.
The administration recommended council approval; the estimate for the project is $1,127,500 to be funded by local option sales tax. The project schedule presented to the council sets a bid opening on Sept. 9, 2025, at 3 p.m.; a recommended award on Sept. 16, 2025; and project completion on Nov. 30, 2026.
The council opened a public hearing on the plans and asked for comments but received none before closing the hearing. Following the presentation, the council moved and seconded a resolution (No. 25-36) to adopt the plans and estimate. A roll-call vote recorded Councilmember Hick, Councilmember Wick, Councilmember Goodchild, Councilmember Bruns and Councilmember Sturgeon as voting yes. The motion carried.
City staff said the administration believes modernized signals will improve traffic flow and safety in the downtown area. No additional financing sources were proposed at the meeting.
The council will move to the bidding phase on the schedule approved. The city will return for contract award and construction oversight as the process continues.
