Mayor Thomas P. McNamara read a proclamation designating July 2025 as Disability Pride Month and urged support for inclusion and accessibility. The proclamation referenced the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and said the city affirms its commitment to equitable policies and practices.
Amy Newell, executive director of The Arc of Winnebago, Boone, and Ogle Counties, accepted the proclamation and described local outreach. "We just love to be here for July celebrating disability pride month. We have yard signs for everybody," Newell said. She described a mural project and said yard signs are being circulated; she invited donations and provided the organization’s website for contributions.
Newell emphasized inclusion and the diversity of people with disabilities, noting local partnerships and the visibility provided by the artwork and yard‑sign campaign. The city packet and proclamation text cite national figures and the role of local organizations in advancing disability rights and community living.
