Airport staff reports passenger and fuel revenue declines; ongoing airline outreach continues
Summary
Staff reported passenger counts and fuel gallons sold below 2024 levels, partly because migrant-related travel in 2024 inflated last year's totals. The airport continues airline outreach to maintain or add routes; American and United maintained current frequencies for now.

Airport staff told the advisory board that passenger counts are picking up for June and July but that overall 2025 activity is expected to be lower than 2024, a year that included elevated passenger numbers tied to migrant travel.
Staff said cargo activity similarly remains below the highs seen late last year and that fuel gallons sold dropped sharply in April and May compared with the prior year, which is reducing fuel-related revenue. Lower jet-fuel prices were also cited as a factor in lower fuel revenue.
On scheduled service, staff reported American Airlines and United Airlines have kept current frequencies (staff reported five daily frequencies for American and three for United), but cautioned that airlines periodically re-evaluate schedules and frequencies. Staff said American flagged concerns about declining load factors and that some later flights could be consolidated if demand does not improve.
Airport air-service staff reviewed recent outreach conducted at an industry meeting in Indianapolis and follow-up conversations with carriers. Allegiant suspended LAX service as it reduces exposure to the crowded LAX market but may reconsider seasonal or other markets in a future planning cycle; staff said they are pursuing conversations with Allegiant for possible summer service. Staff also reported meetings with Breeze, Delta (network manager engagement), Southern Airlines (regional turboprop operator expressing interest in short regional circuits), JSX and Viva; staff said each carrier's interest depends on network fit and financial incentives or guarantees that may be needed for startup service.
Staff stressed airlines evaluate route economics and hub connectivity when deciding service; the board encouraged continued outreach and asked staff to bring specific proposals and cost estimates back for future consideration.
No carrier committed to a new scheduled, yearlong nonstop route during the meeting.
