Alliance on Aging presents Local Aging and Disability Action Plan to Greenfield council

Alliance on Aging presented Greenfield’s council with a Local Aging and Disability Action Plan that organizers say was developed through surveys, stakeholder interviews and solution summits across north and south Monterey County.
Steve Macias, executive director with Alliance on Aging, said the planning process included an advisory council of 37 organizations and 15 community members, 397 community-survey responses, 42 stakeholder surveys and eight solution-summit forums held in English and Spanish with 232 participants. Macias said the plan adapts AARP’s eight domains of livability (housing; outdoor spaces and buildings; transportation; civic participation and employment; communication and information; social participation; and health services and community supports) and adds disaster preparedness and services.
Macias summarized one priority recommendation in each domain: establish community groups to improve civic participation; create resource guides for employment and training; develop a communication strategy and translated materials for rural areas; develop disaster preparedness communications tailored to aging and disability communities; improve wait times and specialist access for rural health care; continue mobile support models such as SoCoast; promote accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to expand housing options for older adults; repair sidewalks and traffic controls to improve accessibility; expand senior programming and increase rural transportation access to health-care visits.
The plan, Macias said, is available in English and Spanish on Alliance on Aging’s website and will be used to guide implementation and cross-sector collaboration; Monterey County recently received national designation as an AARP age-friendly network member in part based on this work.
