Property owner Ryan Goodwin told the board the pole barn has been used to house his in‑laws since 2023 when health issues made travel and RV living impractical.
Staff reported the pole barn is connected to the existing on‑site septic system and to township water; a physician’s letter documenting the need for daily assistance accompanied the application. Staff recommended a temporary two‑year special exception and asked that the board consider allowing staff to administratively review future renewals every two years. The building inspector who reviewed submitted photos said the structure appeared suitable for livable space based on the materials presented; staff noted the barn will need to be remodeled back to non‑livable use if the hardship ends.
After a motion and second, the board voted to approve the special exception for two years and to authorize staff to process subsequent renewals administratively so the petitioner would not need to appear at the board each cycle. The board recorded the item as approved by voice vote.
