The Vigo County Board of Zoning Appeals approved variances allowing Brian and Cynthia Judy to rebuild a detached garage at 9420 N. Houghton Avenue after a storm collapsed the prior structure. The lot is a platted parcel of roughly 10,318 square feet and does not meet the Unified Zoning Ordinance’s 20,000‑square‑foot minimum for the RS (single‑family suburban) district.
Staff told the board the original detached garage dated from 1967 and the house from 1910 per the county assessor. Staff recommended the board allow reconstruction in the same location with the condition that an improvement‑location permit be issued for the new detached garage. Vigo County environmental staff reported there is no septic system on file for the property and had no concerns about rebuilding in the same location.
The board approved the request on a voice vote. Staff noted that if a septic system is installed in the future, the owners would retain adequate space for replacement or repairs.
