Board hears updates on curriculum (AI focus), facilities, finance and HR; legislative watchers note Auditor General release

Committee reports at the Feb. 20 Colonial School District meeting covered curriculum planning (including AI in education), facilities renovation, finance projections and HR activities.

The curriculum committee reported that recent in-service work and board-approved guiding principles addressed artificial intelligence in education; sessions led by teachers and administrators focused on best practices for AI use in efficiency, curriculum and instruction. The committee also reviewed school improvement plans, summer academy opportunities and the extended school year (ESY) program for the coming summer.

Facilities and transportation committee members reported that renovations at Colonial Elementary School are progressing and that the board reviewed items in a five-year facilities plan. The finance committee reported on two items the board voted on during the meeting and said projected figures for the 2025–26 budget were slightly more favorable than earlier projections.

Human resources provided a readout from black male educators who attended the Black Educators Network/Black Male Educators conference in Philadelphia and encouraged board members to review the recording of that session. In legislative updates, the board noted monitoring the governor's budget and called attention to a release from the Pennsylvania Auditor General regarding Kasai charter school reform; upcoming dates were announced for a legislative breakfast on April 25 and PSBA Day on the Hill on May 13.

Community reports included a White Marsh Parks & Rec public-lands survey with a roughly 6% township response rate that will inform park land decisions, and the Colonial Education Foundation reminded the public that a giving campaign is concluding and registration is open for the district 5K.
