Board Chair Karen Brill called a special meeting of the School Board of Palm Beach County to order at 2:00 p.m. and asked the clerk to call the roll.
All seven district members — Matthew Lane (District 1), Virginia Savieto (District 2), Karen Brill (District 3), Erica Whitfield (District 4), Gloria Branch (District 5), Marcia Andrews (District 6) and Edwin Ferguson (District 7) — were recorded as present. Superintendent Michael Burke, General Counsel Sean Bernard, Inspector General Theresa Michael and Board Clerk Tony Sinclair were listed as attending.
Board member Matthew Lane moved to approve the agenda; Board member Marcia Andrews seconded the motion. The chair called for discussion, none was offered, and the motion “carried unanimously.” Board member Gloria Branch then moved to approve the consent agenda; Board member Erica Whitfield seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
With no new business, the chair took a motion to adjourn the open session. Board member Gloria Branch moved to adjourn; Board member Virginia Savieto seconded. The motion carried unanimously and the board immediately convened an attorney-client session.
“At this time, I request advice pursuant to Florida Statute 286.011 concerning the following pending litigation matter, Erica Warner v. School Board of Palm Beach County, case number 9-24-CV-80247-DMM,” Chair Karen Brill said, invoking the closed-session authority provided by state law. Brill listed those authorized to attend the attorney-client session: the seven board members; Superintendent Michael Burke; General Counsel Sean Bernard; district staff attorneys Danielle Williams, Christine Gardner and Eric Bell; and other district staff. The chair said the session would be recorded by a court reporter and that the transcript “shall be part of the district’s public record at the conclusion of the litigation.”
The board began the attorney-client session in Training Room Thurber A; the chair said the session was expected to last approximately 15 minutes. No public comments were taken during the open meeting, and no expulsions or other disciplinary actions were voted on in open session.
