McHenry County appoints two applicants to Historic Preservation Commission after interviews

On Nov. 4 the Planning, Environment and Development Committee interviewed two applicants for the Historic Preservation Commission and later voted to appoint both to terms expiring Nov. 26, 2030.

Philip Delap (who asked to be called Phil during his interview) told the committee he has lived in McHenry County for about six to seven years, has volunteer experience with Valley Heights Cemetery and said he wants to "be a little more involved in the community" and help preserve local history.

Anthony Alfaro, a former commission member whose two-year term had recently ended, described work the commission completed during his tenure, including landmarking the Whitaker House in Huntley. Alfaro said he would like the commission to expand public engagement and digital access to local landmarks through interactive maps and outreach; he also discussed practical challenges to preservation such as owner willingness and restoration costs.

Committee members asked about grants and collaboration. Alfaro said funding sources exist but convincing property owners and coordinating volunteer capacity are the major barriers. He described efforts to send approachable letters to property owners to encourage landmarking without making the process seem intimidating.

After brief deliberation the committee moved to appoint both applicants. The motion to appoint both candidates was seconded by Carl; roll-call votes recorded unanimous approval by members present, including Jim Kearns participating remotely.
