Committee advances Schultz Park arboretum application; arborist visit and student help planned

Committee members reported progress on a submission to recognize Schultz Park as an arboretum and described a small set of remaining verification tasks.

Members said they compared signs to trees in the field and found most species match the map but noted a few discrepancies that require a second visit for ground‑truthing. The group scheduled a verification visit at Charles Park with retired arborist Bruce Powell on Nov. 17 at 12:30 p.m. to confirm species identifications. Committee members also said they need at least two photos of Schultz Park for the application and that Schultz Park Advisory Committee members prefer retaining the name "Schultz Park" rather than rebranding it "Schultz Park Arboretum."

A high‑school student, Jonah Lipar, expressed interest in a capstone project to help update the map graphic and take photos. Committee members encouraged the student to assist with updating the park map and files for a sign and website. Members discussed locating the original graphic file so it can be edited, reprinted for a park sign and posted on the town website.

No formal vote was taken; members agreed to reconvene after the arborist visit and to share files with the volunteer student for map updates.
