The San Juan County building inspector has taken a new job at the sheriff’s department, leaving the county without an on-staff inspector and affecting interlocal inspection arrangements with Bluff and Monticello. Bluff officials said Jan. 7 that the county is considering engaging the departing inspector as a contractor and suggested the town explore the same option.
Council members said the town issues only a small number of construction permits annually (estimated at four or five) and that contracting an individual inspector could be more cost-effective than buying into the county’s permit-tracking system. Staff reported that the person leaving the county indicated a willingness to provide contracted inspections, and county staff (Kristen/Tristan Bushnell) said they would share a draft contract the county is preparing so Bluff can use it as a template.
The council asked staff to follow up with county contacts to confirm the inspector’s availability and the timing of his departure and to obtain the draft contract language. No final decision was made; the council will consider contract terms, fees, and any conflict-of-interest concerns at a work session.
