Centennial High students honored for Ivy and QuestBridge acceptances; MESA club seeks trip funding

The board paused regular business at its Feb. 12 meeting to recognize Centennial High School seniors who have earned selective college admissions and scholarship distinctions and to hear a student-club presentation.
Mike Henderson, Centennial High's college and career counselor, introduced Emmanuel Seguin, a senior admitted to Yale and listed as a National Merit finalist and U.S. Presidential Scholars candidate. Henderson said Emmanuel plans to study bioengineering or biochemistry and noted private colleges' full-need policies that reduce student out-of-pocket costs.
Henderson also introduced Lorenzo Machado, a QuestBridge College Match finalist matched to Columbia University to study business and environmental engineering, and Olivia Phan, a QuestBridge match to Stanford University who plans to study bioengineering. Board members and the superintendent congratulated the students and noted certificates and photos would be distributed after a brief recess.
Following recognitions, Centennial High MESA students (who described MESA as a mathematics, engineering, science and achievement club) presented highlights from a Portland State University field trip where members soldered components and built working radios and toured labs including a drop tower and robotics projects. The students requested district support for an upcoming March 6 field trip to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers federal building (bus transportation and a substitute teacher for the supervising teacher). Principal Miller gave a positive, but nonbinding, thumbs-up and the superintendent said staff would "figure out something"—no formal motion or budget appropriation was recorded at the meeting.
