County health screening finds carotid and other abnormalities; county to continue program

Leavenworth County reported 205 employees participated in the year’s health gauge screening; staff highlighted carotid artery findings and other abnormalities that enabled early clinical follow-up for at least one employee and recommended continuation of the program.
County staff reported that 205 employees completed the county’s health gauge assessment this year, an increase of about 69 participants from the previous year, and asked the board to continue supporting the program.
Jamie, who presented the aggregated report, said screenings found carotid-artery results including one critical value (about 70% blockage) and additional significant and mild findings. The screening also identified 13 abnormal thyroid results, two multicystic thyroids, five irregular heartbeats, two gallstones and one large lymph node. Jamie said one younger employee who received follow-up care was grateful the condition was discovered early through the screening.
Commissioners and staff described the program as preventive health care that can detect otherwise unknown conditions and said financial incentives and point programs had increased participation this year. Commissioners noted the county has supported the program for approximately six to seven years and that earlier detection can reduce long-term costs.
The board expressed support for continuing the screening with the current vendor or other methods. No formal action or funding change was adopted at the meeting beyond acknowledging the program and the annual budget amendment that reflects employee-benefit cost changes.
