Jefferson High student selected as South Dakota delegate to U.S. Senate Youth Program

Champ Baumgarten, a student at Jefferson High School, told the Sioux Falls School District 49-5 Board of Education he was selected by the South Dakota Department of Education to attend the United States Senate Youth Program in Washington, D.C., for a week this March.
"During this week, I'll have the honor of meeting the president, a US Supreme Court justice, and various different cabinet leaders," Baumgarten said. He added that the scholarship accompanying the selection included a $10,000 award from the Hearst Foundation and was intended to encourage continued public service and college study.
Baumgarten thanked Jefferson faculty and staff by name, citing principal Dan Conrad and his counselor, Mr. Matzke, as influences. "Under principal Conrad's leadership, Jefferson has truly embraced its values of inclusivity and respect for all," he said. He also noted that district flexibility allowed him to study abroad in Taiwan and serve recently as a U.S. Senate page.
Board members and attendees congratulated Baumgarten and urged him to share his experiences on his return. He told the board he plans to "come back to South Dakota after my education to help out my state in some way," and that he had been admitted early action to Yale, where he intends to study economics, international relations and foreign languages.
The board also acknowledged the LifeScape ambassadors who nominated the district for a disability inclusion award earlier in the meeting.
No formal action was required for the recognition.
