Orono schools report debate, athletics, theater honors; board honors two long-serving trustees

Superintendent Dr. Flesher opened the meeting's updates by celebrating recent student accomplishments across activities and athletics. He reported Orono's debate teams placed strongly at Mounds Park Academy and the Minnesota Classic State Debate Tournament; multiple students and teams earned honors in athletics, Nordic skiing and hockey; and the fall musical Anastasia received several Hennepin Theatre Trust Spotlight recognitions with individual student honors.
"Grace Fisher and Keegan Clares won 4 to 0 and won the team novice division," Dr. Flesher said, summarizing early-season debate results. He also noted the high school production earned invitations and individual awards that provide students statewide performance opportunities.
The board used the meeting to formally recognize two long-serving trustees whose terms end this month. The superintendent presented tokens and read tributes to Treasurer Ally Howe, who has served on negotiations and parent partnership committees and is a practicing attorney and district parent, and Board Chair Mike Bash, who has served nearly 21 years and has chaired the board for the last two years.
Both trustees offered brief remarks expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve. Board members and administration thanked the trustees for years of service and participation in district committees and community engagement.
