Orono board adopts 200- and 300-series policy revisions, approves both readings in one meeting

The Orono Public School District board on Dec. 9 adopted revisions to policies in the 200 series and the 300 series, approving the policy changes in a single meeting after the policy committee described the edits as non-substantive.
Superintendent Dr. Flesher told the board the 200- and 300-series changes are primarily punctuation and editorial updates that align district language with Minnesota School Boards Association model policies. "These are very standard definition-type policies and the changes are really punctuation oriented," the superintendent said when introducing the 300 series.
The board first moved and adopted policies in the 200 series, including policies 205 (open meetings and closed meetings), 206 (public participation in school board meetings), 208 (development, adoption and implementation of policies), 209 (code of ethics), 210 (conflict of interest) and 214 (out-of-state travel by school board members).
Later in the meeting the board read and adopted the 300 series (policies 301, 302, 303, 304, 305 and 306) addressing administration, the superintendent's role, superintendent selection, contract and evaluation, policy implementation and an administrative code of ethics. The board policy committee said the changes track MSBA model language and do not change substantive requirements.
Board members were given the opportunity to delay final action for a subsequent meeting but proceeded after the policy committee and administration recommended adoption. Each adoption was moved, seconded and approved by the board.
The adopted policies will be posted in district policy documents; administrators said they will ensure the updated policy language is reflected in public materials and on the district website.
