Bert Wesley Huffman, president and CEO of Georgia Public Broadcasting (doing business as GPB), briefed the committees on GPB’s operations and public service role. He said GPB reaches about 98% of the state on television and about 90% on radio, and that GPB’s funding mix includes approximately 34% state appropriation and 36% individual donors and sponsorships.
Huffman said state dollars do not directly fund GPB programming; programming costs are supported by donors and sponsorships. He said state funds are important for infrastructure and education and public‑safety services such as tower operations used by emergency agencies. GPB hosts a large repository of K–12 educational materials aligned to Georgia Department of Education standards at gpb.org/education; Huffman reported 14.7 million clicks last year and widespread usage of digital Georgia studies content by eighth‑grade classrooms.
He also noted GPB’s role in emergency alerts and public‑safety partnerships (towers and fiber network) and said GPB broadcasts high‑school football during the season and the GHSA championships.
