Residents urge Washington County to retain Office of Sustainability amid budget pressures

Two Washington County residents used public comment time Feb. 18 to urge commissioners to retain the county Office of Sustainability amid budget pressures.
“My name is Lori Watkins, and I am a resident in Washington County … I live in Aloha. And I'm here today to urge you to prioritize the continuation of the Washington County Office of Sustainability in the upcoming budget,” said Lori Watkins. She told the board the office helps reduce operational waste, improve energy efficiency and ensure marginalized communities are included in climate planning.
Debbie Garman, speaking on behalf of herself and members of local climate action group 350 Washington County, said the county’s strategic priorities of health and sustainability require retaining the office’s professional expertise.
“I urge you on behalf of your stated mission to steward the health and well‑being of this county to please retain the key people and expertise that are currently housed in your sustainability office,” Garman said.
No formal action was taken during the meeting; the comments were entered into the public record for board consideration during upcoming budget discussions.
