CUSD moves two curriculum adoptions to 60-day public review: junior-high social studies and automation & robotics (CTE)

Staff recommended junior-high social studies materials (OER for grades 6–7 and McGraw Hill 'Exploring Civics and Economics' for grade 8) and NC3 Festo XL for automation & robotics CTE. The grade-8 class set cost estimate is $183,217.88. Both items will be placed on 60-day display beginning Feb. 13, 2025 for public comment.
The Chandler Unified School District presented two curriculum items for public review on Feb. 12, 2025: a junior-high social-studies adoption and a career-and-technical-education (CTE) automation and robotics curriculum.
The junior-high recommendation includes OER Project unit sets for sixth and seventh grades (Big History Project / World History Project) and McGraw Hill's Exploring Civics and Economics (2024) for eighth grade. Staff said OER resources provide free, media-rich teacher materials; McGraw Hill will supply a teacher digital edition and print class sets. The estimated cost for the eighth-grade class set (40 teacher/class materials for 38 teachers) was presented as $183,217.88, including tax, shipping and processing. Staff confirmed there are no student digital components for the eighth-grade package presented.
For automation and robotics, staff recommended the NC3 Festo XL curriculum aligned to Arizona CTE standards for programs at ACP, Castile, Hamilton and Perry high schools. The Festo XL resources will be delivered electronically to teachers.
Per ARS 15-721 (as cited in the presentation), both the textbook and the CTE curriculum will be placed on display for a 60-day review period at the district's Melinda Romero Instructional Resource Center beginning Feb. 13, 2025. After the review period, the items will be brought back to the board for approval.
