District science fair showcase draws 54 students; regional and state advancement scheduled

District staff reported on the Lenoir County Public Schools 'Celebration of Science' event where more than 54 students presented projects. The board heard that LCPS regularly advances projects to the Region 1 and state fairs and received details about topics, judging practice and next-level competition dates.
Crystal Carlisle and colleagues presented the district science fair process and highlights from the Jan. 30 "Celebration of Science" event held at the Kinston Performing Arts Center. Carlisle said each school runs its own science fair, selects top projects and advances winners to the district showcase, which hosted more than 54 students this year.
Presenters described sample projects including investigations into Styrofoam cup reuse, sunshade thermal performance and flood-resilient city models. Students practiced public speaking and presentation skills with facilitators from district STEM, grade-span directors and other specialists. Carlisle said that regular practice at district showcases helps students prepare for Region 1 (East Carolina University) on Feb. 15 and the North Carolina State fair at NC State on March 29.
The board viewed photographs from the event and recognized returning multi-year participants. Carlisle noted that in recent years LCPS has seen multiple regional recognitions and four state-level selections following regional advancement.
Board members praised students and staff and asked staff to relay appreciation to teachers and families.
