Commissioners leave FY2026 volunteer fire department contract requirements unchanged, give departments until 2028 to comply

County Manager Lisa Hughes told the board she had received concerns from a volunteer fire department about proposed FY2026 contract requirements governing board composition.
Hughes said the contract language would require all of a fire department's board members to have a primary residence or business in the department's district and require that a simple majority of directors not be members of the fire department. She noted the contract gives departments until June 30, 2028 to come into compliance and asked whether the board wanted to change the terms.
The Yadkin County Board of Commissioners' consensus was to leave the contract language as written and not make changes at this time. Hughes asked the fire department representative to recruit members who meet the requirements during FY2026, given the multi-year compliance window.
No formal vote was taken to amend the contract at the June 3 session.
