Washington County releases FY26 recommended budget; public hearing set for May 19

Curtis S. Potter, Washington County manager and county attorney, read the recommended FY26 budget message to the Board on May 5 and indicated department heads would be able to speak at the public hearing on May 19. Potter noted the fee schedule was not included in the printed book and that one personnel page failed to print; he said those items would be provided to the Board later.

Commissioner Tracey A. Johnson asked whether the Department of Social Services (DSS) vehicle expenses would be reimbursed; Potter said almost all DSS expenses are state-reimbursed. Commissioner John C. Spruill asked whether the county could purchase some long-lead items for vacant schools; Potter said the county would try to do so. Spruill also expressed opposition to continued county funding for a Clerk of Court position request.

After discussion, the Board approved budget transfers and amendments #2025-093 through #2025-107. Commissioners also agreed to hold a public hearing on the FY26 budget at the May 19, 2025 meeting at 6:00 PM. Commissioner John C. Spruill moved to approve the transfers and amendments; Commissioner Ann C. Keyes seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

Mr. Potter said Mr. Chesson, the county—conomic and strategic development director, could address items at the May 19 public hearing. The Board thanked Potter for his work on the recommended budget.
