Gibson City council hears updates on pool, scooter safety, water-plant upgrades and special-event procedures; visitor flags potential electronic recycler

Alderman Sarah Sarantakos told the Gibson City Council on June 23 that the municipal pool project should be permitted the first week in July. The update was given during committee reports, with no formal vote taken.

Alderman Terry Roesch raised the subject of electric scooters and cited an Illinois law that limits their use to people 18 and older; council discussion focused on education for parents and children about scooter safety rather than immediate regulation. Mayor Daniel Dickey said the first step should be education on safety precautions.

John Bobera provided a summation of new equipment installed at the water plant, and City Superintendent Tyler Martin said Special Event Request Forms will be available at future council meetings so event organizers can file requests and allow city workers to prepare in advance. Treasurer Vickie Lorenzen presented the latest financials, and Administrator Meg Fairchild reported that recent computer training had occurred and that water bills reflected a 4% increase.

Visitors in the chamber included Dennis Cummins, Billie Jo and Dale Denny, Ellen Hankes, Karen Kummerow and Greg Brucker. Karen Kummerow notified the council there is the possibility of a new electronic recycler and said she will update the council when more information is available. Dale and Lori Denny told the council they are seeking a liquor license for the Summer Bash; they were advised the request must come before the council and will appear on a future agenda.
