Superintendent reports summer construction, high school renovation and AC work; committee to continue start-time study

The superintendent said the summer construction season began with roofing, securing and safety work under a $15,400,000 project approved by voters in May 2024. The high school’s $52,000,000 renovation continues into its third summer; that work includes renovations to the former main office, an expanded cafeteria and science wing classroom renovations.
He reported a grant from an assembly member’s office to install electronic message boards at several campuses and said the district’s facilities schedule is tight: contractors must complete concentrated summer work to meet the August turnover deadline. The superintendent noted supply and sequencing constraints — for example, steel work and roofing require unoccupied spaces — and asked for community patience given the reduced availability of school facilities in summer.
Board members asked about readiness for new temperature-control requirements. The superintendent said Fayett and Mott Road are fully air conditioned, Wellwood is mostly air conditioned and House 2 at the high school will be brought online with rooftop units next year; House 1 already has some air conditioning and will receive retrofits.
The start-times committee will continue work in the autumn to evaluate slide-flip or flip-and-slide bell schedule options for 2026–27; the district is analyzing the ability to shift from a triple-trip to a double-trip bus model and potential impacts on middle and elementary school dismissal times.
Facilities committee members thanked staff and construction crews for summer packing and turnover work and noted that additional capital prioritization will be needed to finish Eagle Hill, Enders Road and Wellwood projects in future capital cycles.
