Commission adopts resolution to convert two brick street blocks to asphalt
Summary
The commission approved Resolution No. 3423 to convert the 200 block of East Mound (overlay) and the 300 block of Laramie (full-depth asphalt) from brick to asphalt after staff cited poor brick condition and high costs to rehabilitate bricks to modern standards.
Public works staff told the commission that the city—s —like-for-like— policy for preserving brick streets has been followed in recent years but that two blocks now present structural and cost challenges that make conversion to asphalt more feasible.
Clinton McNamee said the 200 block of East Mound would receive an asphalt overlay and that the 300 block of Laramie would be removed and replaced with full-depth asphalt because of underlying structural problems. McNamee estimated approximately $50,000 in materials to do the Laramie full-depth asphalt work using city crews; he said restoring the brick in-place to modern standards would be roughly an order of magnitude more expensive.
Several commissioners and staff discussed the policy—s purpose and the political sensitivity of converting historic brick streets. The commission moved, seconded and adopted Resolution No. 3423 authorizing conversion of the two blocks as described.
