Commission approves temporary lease for riverfront property with Mazook Industries

The Atchison City Commission on a recorded voice vote adopted Resolution No. 3422 authorizing the city to enter a temporary lease with Mazook Industries Inc. for real property at 800 River Road, effective July 16, 2025, and expiring Dec. 31, 2025, with no option for further extension.
Mark Westhoff told the commission this issue dates to a 2003 long-term lease that auto-renewed annually and to a later resolution (Resolution No. 3274) in which a prior commission stated an intention not to renew. Westhoff said Mazook requested additional time to complete cleanup and that the city negotiated lease terms substantially similar to the prior agreement but limited to the short term to allow cleanup to continue.
The commission moved, seconded and approved the resolution. No public opposition was recorded during the discussion on the record.
