A representative of USD 274 told the Oakley City Council on July 7 that the district is exploring asking the city to consider a local sales tax increase to help offset a proposed school bond that the district plans to place on the November ballot.
The district representative said an estimated 1% local sales tax increase would generate about $550,000 a year for the city portion, which the presenter described as roughly equivalent to “an 8 mil relief” for the bond if it were to pass in November. The district representative said the steering committee had not finalized the bond amount or the exact tax rate; during discussion the figure of roughly $25,000,000 for the bond was mentioned as a planning estimate.
Council members pressed for more detail. They asked how long the tax would run (the representative said it would likely remain until the bond was paid), how county and city tax capacity might limit options (staff noted some sales‑tax limits and said county rates may already be at their ceilings), and reminded the presenter that any ballot measure would need to meet county clerk filing deadlines in early August to appear on the November ballot. Several council members said they would like more information and to possibly tour school facilities before taking any position.
No motion or formal action was taken; staff and the school representative agreed to continue discussions and share additional information.
