Coos County awards $155,000 roof contract for OSU Extension office in Myrtle Point

Coos County commissioners on July 1 awarded a contract for the OSU Extension office roof replacement to Pioneer Roofing LLC for the low bid of $155,000.

Earlier in the meeting the 4‑H Extension Service District approved spending district funds and requested the county contract for the roof replacement; the board later awarded the county contract consistent with that district request. County staff presented two bids: Pioneer Roofing (low bid, $155,000) and Richard’s Remodeling Construction (high bid, $219,000). A county representative said a prior, informal estimate for repairs several years ago had been about $56,000 but formal procurement revealed additional work and costs.

Colton, a county staff member, explained why the county purchased the building leased by the extension district: the county stepped in when the property owner intended to sell and the county wanted to preserve the district’s tenancy. “We were approached by the Umpqua Community Development Corporation … the county stepped in to prevent some other landlord from acquiring the property and potentially kicking the district out,” Colton said. He said the county discounted purchase price because the roof needed significant repair and that district funds will be used to pay for replacement; the county expects to collect rent and recover maintenance costs over time.

The project scope includes a full roof replacement, replacement of single‑shingle siding on a tower, vents and flashing. County staff said the work should prevent roof concerns for 30–40 years. The board voted to award the contract and authorize signatures.

The county and the 4‑H district will finalize contract documents for execution.
