The Newton County Commissioners Court on July 20 approved a resolution to apply for a Help America Vote Act (HAVA) election-security subgrant with the Office of the Secretary of State. The county expects approximately $32,500 to be available for election security, with a required local match noted by staff.
A county elections staff member and the county clerk/voter registrar asked the court to pass the resolution so the county would be eligible to request the funds by the June filing deadline. Commissioners were told there is not yet a contract or award; the resolution makes the county eligible to receive the subgrant if awarded.
Commissioner Powell moved the resolution; Commissioner Benson seconded and the court approved it by voice vote. County staff said the funds would be used to support election security measures in the tax office and the county clerk’s office, and the auditor will identify the matching local funds if the subgrant is awarded.
