Council approves amendment to expand Washington Conservation Corps crew time for detention-pond maintenance

The City Council approved an amendment July 9 to its drainage-facility maintenance agreement with the Washington State Department of Ecology to increase Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) crew time from two weeks to six weeks for vegetation maintenance in detention ponds. The amendment increases costs due to the WCC’s loss of AmeriCorps funding and raises the daily crew price from $1,385 to $1,540, with the total amendment cost not to exceed $35,720.
Public works staff (Blaine Chesterfield) told council that the WCC provides five crew members, a truck and equipment and is offering four additional weeks after the two weeks previously contracted. Staff said the additional weeks would help the city catch up on detention-pond maintenance that had fallen behind and still represented good value despite the per-day increase.
Council moved and seconded approval of Amendment No. 1 to the agreement with the Department of Ecology to add the additional crew time; the motion passed on a voice vote.
Staff indicated the work will be scheduled and delivered under the existing agreement amendment terms and that funds were available to cover the increased cost.
