Council postpones Wrights Mill Road rezoning to Sept. 16 to allow PDD review

At its July 8 meeting, the Auburn City Council opened a second‑reading public hearing on a rezoning request for approximately 10.1 acres on the west side of Wrights Mill Road, just south of Interstate 85. The applicant said the request would allow 21 single‑family detached lots accessed via a new public street off Wrights Mill Road.

Council members raised traffic‑safety concerns tied to Wrights Mill Road’s classification and 45 mph speed limit and asked whether new curb cuts directly onto Wrights Mill could be restricted. The applicant indicated willingness to pursue a Planned Development District (PDD) overlay, which would allow the council to lock in site layout and specific conditions if the PDD is approved.

At the applicant’s request and with council concurrence, councilmember motioned to postpone final action to the Sept. 16 council meeting (date certain) to permit the applicant to pursue concurrent PDD review and to allow staff to process design review items. The postponement was approved by voice vote and a public hearing will be held that evening.

Councilmembers and staff noted that rezoning without a PDD gives future owners flexibility to develop consistent with DDH density rules; a PDD overlay is the instrument to secure a particular site layout and limit future curb cuts and access points.
